Checkout steps need owners, not just rates

Why naming who owns each cart-to-paid moment changes what a funnel readout can achieve.

Commerce teams often stare at a staircase of percentages and ask engineering to “fix conversion.” Without an owner for address capture, payment method selection, or order confirmation, the staircase stays decorative.

A useful checkout readout pairs each step with a sentence of context and a named owner. Product may own latency; payments may own decline messaging; merchandising may own last-chance offers that interrupt the path.

In our Bangkok practice we refuse to deliver funnels that cannot be staffed. If no one would change a calendar at the low versus high end of a step’s range, the metric is not ready for a planning meeting.
